Road to Wimbledon - Day 5 |
|
|
12 August 2005
Top seed Tom Farqharson, who rescued Thursday’s quarter final
by finishing his match with an incredible five straight games, extended
his unbroken run of games today by winning the first set of his
semi final against Edson Smith 6-0.
Farqharson, who had predicted today’s match against the third
seed from Hertfordshire would be the hardest of the week, had a
far easier than expected passage to the final, dropping just three
games in the second set.
In tomorrow’s final the Cheam 13 year old faces David Watson,
the Essex seventh seed who finished off the impressive run of grass
court first timer, Michael Ajibade from Lancashire. Ajibade had
match points in the third set but tenacity and ultra-competitiveness
won the day for Watson.
Hannah Toro, a tall and powerful left hander from Middlesex, is
the sole non-seed in the singles finals after beating Derbyshire’s
Mawuena Ankutse 7-5 6-3 this afternoon. Toro faces Lincolnshire
third seed Samantha Vickers who overcame the diminutive second seed,
Leicestershire’s Joanna Horne 3-6 7-5 6-2.
Although much rests on tomorrow’s finals, all four singles
finalist have
been awarded a week’s training at the LTA’s winter training
base in La
Manga.
On Aorangi Park’s grass court, away from the main action
on, All England Club coach, Dan Bloxham gave a memorable clinic
to children who had been knocked out of the tournament and those
who unable to be selected from the County Final stage.
