New World-Class Tennis Star Set for Play

April 12 2006

The all-new Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum, located at the home of the Wimbledon Championships, is set to be the newest star of world tennis when the attraction is officially opened today by HRH The Duke of Kent, President of the All England Club and Patron of the Museum, after a multi-million pound transformation.

The new Museum combines state-of-the-art interactive touch screens with its unparalleled collection of traditional and contemporary tennis memorabilia in order to explore the story of the game and the Wimbledon Championships, from past to present, in a vibrant and entertaining way. The new Museum will appeal to tennis, Wimbledon, sports and entertainment fans of all ages from around the world as they enjoy:

  • Seeing John McEnroe ‘live’ in a recreation of the 1980s Gentlemen’s Dressing Room as he relates stories conveying the drama and emotion of the Wimbledon Championships.
  • Experiencing what it’s like to play on Centre Court in the amazing 200° 3-D cinema featuring a film on the The Science of Tennis (filmed during the 2005 Championships)
  • Watching exclusive television interviews with the legends of the game and many past and present champions
  • Pitting their powers of speed, stamina and coordination in the Reaction Zone with the aim is to turn off as many illuminated tennis balls as possible in 30 seconds
  • Using interactive touch screens bringing to life the Museum’s extensive archive
  • News, results and highlights from all the current tournaments on the men’s and women’s tours
  • Tennis fashion – from long white skirts and flannel trousers through frilly knickers and Ted Tinling’s dresses to the contemporary style of Serena and Venus Williams, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Maria Sharapova.
  • Having their picture taken with the famous Championships’ trophies
  • The Wimbledon Tour – go behind-the-scenes in the company of a professional Blue Badge guide.

The experience is complemented by a superb audio guide, which is offered as part of the entry price and is available in eight languages - English, Japanese, Mandarin, Spanish, Russian, French, German and Italian.

There are also special audio tours for the partially sighted and, for use by the hard of hearing, handheld sets which give interpretation in UK sign language.

The Kenneth Ritchie Library completes the Museum’s line-up and boasts the greatest collection of tennis books from around the world.

Tim Phillips, Chairman of the All England Club, said: “The new Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum is a world-class attraction and a brilliant addition to the overall Wimbledon experience. The Museum’s unrivalled collection of past and present memorabilia coupled with state-of-the-art interactive displays makes for a hugely entertaining visit. Anyone coming to London will now have even more reason to include Wimbledon year-round on their itinerary.”

Entrance to the Museum is through the Wimbledon Shop at the Museum, where visitors can buy a wide range of official Wimbledon merchandise, such as tennis and leisure clothing, the famous Championships’ towels, sports and fashion bags, tennis rackets and balls, DVDs books, jewellery and a range of souvenirs.
