| All resurfacing costs are being met by the All England Club, as part of an agreement drawn up between Merton and the Club. The agreement gives the Club priority on the use of these tennis courts during the period of The Championships (three weeks in June/July), the National Veterans’ Championships of Great Britain (one week in August) and the National 14 and Under Challenge (one week in August). In practice, however, the courts are almost always released for normal public use as they have been in the past. One of the users of the Wimbledon Park courts will be the hundreds of local state school children who participate in the Club’s Wimbledon Junior Tennis Initiative, run in conjunction with Merton and Wandsworth Councils. The Initiative usually takes place most weekends within the Club’s grounds, but moves to Wimbledon Park around the time of The Championships. Leader of the Council, Councillor Andrew Judge said: “The agreement between Merton and the AELTC will undoubtedly prove beneficial to both parties and provide first class tennis courts in Wimbledon Park for the enjoyment of residents. The resurfacing of the courts in Wimbledon Park will bring Merton’s public tennis courts up to a standard expected of the home of the Wimbledon Championships.” Christopher Gorringe, Chief Executive of the All England Club, said: “We are pleased to have reached an agreement with Merton Council that will lead both to the immediate renovation of the 10 artificial grass tennis courts in Wimbledon Park and their subsequent maintenance for the next decade. These public courts will be some of the best in the country and we are delighted they will soon be back in full use for the benefit of the local community.” - ENDS -
