Dinara Safina overcame fellow Russian Elena Dementieva 3-6 6-2 6-2 in the final of the Qatar Telecom German Open on Sunday.

It was the first career Tier I title for Safina, who defeated world number one Justine Henin and eight-time grand slam winner Serena Williams on her way to the final.

Dementieva has also enjoyed a morale-boosting week, ousting defending champion and second seed Ana Ivanovic in the semi-finals.
