Venus Williams has withdrawn from the Family Circle Cup due to illness.
World number six Williams has won the tournament in the past and expressed disappointment that she will not be able to compete in this year's competition, which is scheduled to begin on Saturday.
"I regret that I will not be participating in the Family Circle Cup," Williams said. "I always enjoy coming to Charleston, especially since I've won the tournament in the past and this year marks their special 35th anniversary."
She added: "I wish the tournament my best and look forward to returning to competitive play in Rome the week of May 12."
Tournament director Robin Reynolds also expressed her regret.
"It's unfortunate that Venus was forced to withdraw due to illness, and we wish her a quick return to the tour," Reynolds said. "We will announce another marquee name from our player field in her place very soon."
The Family Circle Cup already has a strong field, including Australian Open champion Maria Sharapova and Venus' sister, Serena Williams.
