Roger Federer was handed his place in the fourth round of the Sony Ericsson Open when Robin Soderling retired from their meeting on Monday.
The top-seeded Swiss had taken the opening set 6-4 and held a 3-0 lead in the second when his Swedish opponent was forced to call it a day because of illness.
Federer, who hit six aces in the third-round match, will next face Jose Acasuso after the unseeded Argentinian saw off Dudi Sela 6-4 6-4.
Fourth seed Nikolay Davydenko also secured his placed in the fourth round but was made to work hard by Simone Bolelli.
The Italian took the opening set on a tie-break but Russia's Davydenko hit back to record a 6-7 (5/7) 7-5 6-1 success.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, the 12th seed, fared less well in his third-round match, losing 6-3 6-3 to French compatriot Julien Benneteau.
