Ivanovic advances in Berlin

Saturday, 10 May, 2008

Second seed Ana Ivanovic continued her title defence at the Qatar Telecom German Open on Saturday.

Ivanovic posted a 3-6 6-4 6-3 victory over 10th-seeded Hungarian Agnes Szavay when they completed their quarter-final match at the claycourt event.

The defending champion, Ivanovic claimed the second set on Friday before the match was suspended due to darkness. When play resumed on Saturday, the Serbian wasted little time, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the decisive third set en route to the victory.

Ivanovic took advantage of eight double faults by Szavay while winning seven break points during the match.

The world number two will face seventh-seeded Elena Dementieva of Russia in the semi-finals later on Saturday.

In Saturday's other semi-final, giant killer Dinara Safina of Russia, the 13th seed, will take on unseeded Victoria Azarenka of Belarus - the surprise of the tournament who has ousted both Serena Williams and world number one Justine Henin.
