Kiefer saves face as Spain progress

Tuesday, 15 April, 2008

Nicolas Kiefer defeated Feliciano Lopez in straight sets to ensure Germany avoided a clean sweep at the hands of Spain in their Davis Cup quarter-final in Bremen.

The Spanish entered Sunday's reverse singles having already booked their place in the last four when Lopez and Fernando Verdasco combined to defeat Philipp Kohlschreiber and Philipp Petzschner in an epic five set match on Saturday.

And when Verdasco rallied from a set down to defeat Michael Berrer in Sunday's opening singles match the Germans were in danger of falling to a a 5-0 defeat on home soil but Kiefer ensured they avoided that humiliation with a 6-4 7-6 (7/2) over Lopez.
