Nalbandian sees Argentina through

Tuesday, 15 April, 2008

David Nalbandian won a thrilling five-setter against Sweden's Robin Soderling to give Argentina an unassailable 3-1 lead in their Davis Cup World Group quarter-final in Buenos Aires on Sunday.

Nalbandian triumphed 9-7 in the deciding set of the fourth rubber to seal his third victory of the tie.

The former Wimbledon finalist recovered from going two sets to one down to seal a 6-4 1-6 4-6 6-4 9-7 victory after four hours and nine minutes and set up a semi-final showdown with Russia.

The world number seven broke twice to take the opening set but stuttered in the next two as Soderling slammed down nine aces to snatch the upper hand.

Nalbandian though got back on track in the fourth before sealing victory on his fourth match-point in the 16th game of the final set.

The victory is Argentina's 12th straight success on home soil in the Davis Cup, their last defeat coming in 1998.
