Top seed Fernando Verdasco safely negotiated the first round of the Ordina Open in 's-Hertogenbosch on Sunday with a straight-sets victory over Pablo Andujar.

The Spaniard proved too strong for his countryman and prevailed 6-3 7-5 thanks to a solitary break in each set.

Fifth seed Igor Kunitsyn progressed after beating Frenchman Arnaud Clement 6-2 6-3 while there were also wins on day one for Ivan Navarro, Dudi Sela and Ramon Sluiter.

Navarro saw off Gilles Muller 7-5 7-5, Sela proved too strong for Christophe Rochus 6-2 6-4 and wild card Sluiter beat Daniel Gimeno-Traver 6-2 7-5.

There was a shock on the women's side as eighth seed Elena Vesnina was knocked out by Kristina Barrois 6-4 6-3.

In an all-Romanian affair, Sorana Cirstea edged out Monica Niculescu 5-7 6-3 6-3.
