Ivanovic makes winning start

Sunday, 25 May, 2008

Second seed Ana Ivanovic opened her French Open campaign with a straight-sets win over Sweden's Sofia Arvidsson on Sunday.

The Serbian, who lost to Justine Henin in last year's final at Roland Garros, was not at her best on the Philippe Chatrier court but advanced with a 6-2 7-5 victory.

The 20-year-old will next play the Czech Republic's Lucie Safarova, who beat Sandra Kloesel 6-1 6-1.

Elsewhere, Nicole Vaidisova became the first seed to fall in the women's draw after losing 7-6 (7/2) 6-1 to fellow Czech Iveta Benesova.

Vaidisova, seeded 15th, came to Paris on a five-match losing streak and could not arrest her slide on Court One.
