Japan's Ai Sugiyama secured her place in the second round of the Sony Ericsson Open with a straight-sets victory over Russian wild card Anastasia Pivovarova.
The 32-year-old, who is making her 14th appearance in the event, needed an hour and 49 minutes to defeat the 17-year-old Russian 6-3 7-6 (7/2).
Sugiyama will next face Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain, who received a first-round bye.
Emilie Loit of France overcame Virginia Ruano Pascual 7-6 (7/1) 6-4 to set up a clash with second seed Ana Ivanovic of Serbia.
