Mardy Fish crashed out of the Sony Ericsson Open at the first hurdle on Thursday, going down in straight sets to Frenchman Arnaud Clement.
Fish beat three top-10 players, including world number one Roger Federer, to reach the final at Indian Wells last week - but Clement had few problems as he clinched a 6-3 6-3 win in 69 minutes.
Marat Safin's dismal season continued as the former world number one lost 7-6 (7/3) 4-6 7-6 (7/5) to American qualifier Bobby Reynolds.
Gael Monfils of France came from a set down to defeat American wild card John Isner 6-7 (6/8) 6-3 6-3 and book a second-round meeting with top seed Federer.
