Defending champion Serena Williams overcame Svetlana Kuznetsova 3-6 7-5 6-3 to set up a Sony Ericsson Open final meeting with world number three Jelena Jankovic.
The eight-time grand slam champion, who defeated world number one Justine Henin 6-2 6-0 in the last eight, said: "I felt I made a lot of errors compared to the quarter-final. Svetlana played an entirely different game than I expected her to play, but once I got used to it I was OK.
"It's always nice to come out on top and although I was a little disappointed with how I played, hopefully I can improve for the final."
While Williams was forced to battle, Serbia's Jankovic eased to a 6-1 6-4 victory over Vera Zvonareva.
