South African qualifier Kevin Anderson caused a stunning upset at the Sony Ericsson Open on Friday when he dumped out defending champion Novak Djokovic in the second round.
The third-seeded Serbian entered the Miami tournament in good form, having won the Pacific Life Open at Indian Wells last week, but he was sent crashing out by the player ranked 122nd in the world, who claimed a 7-6 (7-1) 3-6 6-4 victory.
"I really don't know what to say right now," said Anderson, who reached his first ATP final in Las Vegas earlier this month. "Knowing what he's done and what a great player he is, and to have actually beaten him, it's a tremendous experience for me."
Second seed Rafael Nadal claimed his place in the third round by defeating German qualifier Benjamin Becker 7-5 6-2.
The Spaniard committed only four unforced errors and did not face a break point against Becker.
Ninth seed James Blake also advanced with a 7-5 6-3 win over Andreas Seppi of Italy, but seventh seed David Nalbandian and eighth seed Richard Gasquet are both out.
Xavier Malisse broke Nalbandian three times as he clinched a 6-1 6-4 win, while Gasquet suffered a 6-3 6-7 (2/7) 7-6 (7/5) defeat against unseeded Russian Dmitry Tursunov.
