Serena Williams began her title defence at the Sony Ericsson Open with a dominant straight-sets win over Edina Gallovits.
The eighth-seeded American needed only 54 minutes to dispatch the unseeded Romanian 6-1 6-2 in their second-round encounter.
Williams will next face 27th seed Flavia Pennetta of Italy, who overcame Russian Anastasia Rodionova 6-4 6-2.
World number one Justine Henin also progressed, defeating Angelique Kerber of Germany 6-4 6-2.
The Belgian will take on Italy's Sara Errani - a 6-4 4-6 7-6 (7/2) winner against Maria Kirilenko - in the next round.
Second seed Svetlana Kuznetsova overcame Chinese Taipei's Yung-Jan Chan 6-1 3-6 6-0, while sixth seed Venus Williams defeated Poland's Marta Domachowska 6-4 6-3.
The biggest upset of the day came from Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark, who dumped out ninth seed Marion Bartoli of France 6-3 6-1.
Russia's Elena Vesnina also caused an upset as she stunned 15th seed Agnes Szavay of Hungary 6-2 4-6 6-1.
Patty Schnyder of Switzerland managed to avoid an early exit, though, as she battled her way to a 7-6 (10/8) 4-6 6-2 win over American qualifier Vania King.
